Valeriya also hails from Kyiv.
On her last visit to Massachuetts, Valeriya was in Boston performing the
US premiere of Cello Concerto No. 2 by Latvian composer Pēteris Vasks (b. 1946).
Like the Ukrainian composers featured in Introductions, Vasks is familiar with
threats to his safety, identity and creative output.
Due to its spiritual nature Vasks' work was prohibited under Soviet rule in Latvia.
A word from Valeriya about the mission of Ukrainian Music Initiative:
We are deconstructing Ukraine's imperialist identity.
We are building from the ground up as
Ukrainian culture has been revoked, appropriated and eradicated.
The systematic destruction was such that
we had very little left to shape our identity.
We take pride in our background and in where we came from and
we are taking ownership of our past, present and future and
reclaiming our identity through classical music.
