This Saturday! All The Things We Are

Today we have a word from

Brooke Schooley in preparation for

this Saturday's performance of

All The Things We Are

a concert/cabaret of American music

at Saint John's in the Village.

I am SO excited.

See you there!

a word from Brooke Schooley...

Since leaving a traditional career in finance, I have really struggled with

trying to explain to people

what I do.

I don’t really spend the majority of my time doing any one thing!

The irony is, when I used to have a very simple answer to this question

("I am an investment banker"),

no one asked.

I was much more likely to be asked who designed the dress I had on or

"What does your husband do?" (groan).

I’m told it is very American to get to know people through this

shortcut method of asking what they do…

inherently defining them by how they earn a living.

Which is why I love that we have a show of American music titled

"All The Things We Are."

I feel like we Americans DO value well-roundedness.

Wasn’t this very concept taught to me in

Girl Scouts with the earning of all of those badges?

Rather than "What do you do?",

maybe we could ask

"What badge are you working on?!"

The badge I am currently working on is songwriting, and

I can’t wait to share

my song about this "What do you do?" dilemma at the show!
