CONSONANCE
Ukrainian Composers and the Western Canon at
Shevchenko Scientific Society
Experiencing Ukrainian Music Initiative's second program take shape has been exhilarating.
Beginning with the foundational, Classical music of
Ukrainian Dmytro Bortniansky and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
the concert then moves to
exploration and development of folk themes in the works of
Czech Bohuslav Martinů and Ukrainian Zoltan Almashi.
The Avant-garde songs of Ukrainian Stefania Turkewich
take center stage before the evening transitions to the
evocative and dreamy realm of two Ukrainians in Paris -
Vladimir Dyck and Theodore Akimenko.
Ukrainian Sergei Bortkiewicz's illustrative settings of
Grete Körber's powerful German texts close the program.
While the political, cultural, historic and geographic
circumstances of creation were
at the forefront of discussions in selecting these pieces,
the timeless beauty of the music is what resonates.
Ukrainian Music Initiative looks forward to seeing this program take flight!
A word from Rita:
Ukrainian music is much more diverse than most realize.
Our programming aims to highlight composers of
different backgrounds, traditions and artistic voices who together shape our Ukrainian culture.
Presenting these programs allows us not only to celebrate our heritage, but to help audiences discover a musical tradition whose depth and beauty inspires us.
Thank you to ArtWine, East Village Meat Market and Stefa C. for
a beautiful, scrumptious and spirited reception.
Thank you to Shevchenko Scientific Society for
partnering with Ukrainian Music Initiative to present the evening.
Thank you to Ukrainian American Educational Center of Boston
for supporting all things Vira + Friends.
